Let’s talk goalies. Early in the season I am generally quick to adjust for noticeable changes. I don’t want to be reactionary, but I think we learn a lot early on and I tend to put real stock into early goaltending trends, with the caveat that not every situation can be looked at under the same lens. With that being said, let’s touch on some tandems that I’ve been more aggressive in adjusting through the first two-and-a-half weeks:
Jakub Dobes to Jacob Fowler
Dobes caught lightning in a bottle for the Habs following the Olympics and carried that through to the end of their playoff run, but hasn’t been able to pick up where he left off. I don’t want to overreact to a bad start, but it’s fair to say Fowler’s always been the more highly regarded goalie. Fowler is a different class of prospect, and this will be fully his net one day. The question is whether that day has already come, and it’s stunning that we’re asking this considering he was starting games for Laval just two weeks ago. He is so calm and composed between the pipes and has been the guy St. Louis has leaned on with the Habs struggling to get a foothold early on. He helped steady the ship with wins over Detroit and Buffalo, while Dobes has looked fairly lost since an opening night win against the Leafs. It’s unfair to Dobes to gloss over his NHL resume because of four bad games, but with expectations raised in Montreal this year, he’s not going to be afforded the time he was last year to play his way into form. This is Fowler’s net until either guy provides a reason for that to change, and I am at the point where I have Fowler rated as the slightly better goalie – a gap that can grow quickly if they continue on this trajectory. I also think Dobes is the likeliest trade candidate for the Habs when Montembault comes back. A three-goalie system is doesn’t make sense for anyone. Montembault’s trade value is at an all-time low, while Fowler is their future (and present?). Trading Dobes off an elite playoff run to find an upgrade up front wouldn’t be the worst idea for Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
Dan Vladar to Joseph Woll
Vladar didn’t just have a career year at 29, he absolutely smashed his previous highs in games played (54, previously 27), goals against average (2.42, previously 2.75), goals saved above average (12.65, previously -0.48), and goals saved above expected (22.87, previously -1). That’s quite a leap to take at 28 years old and I’ve been hesitant to buy in. Through two weeks he looks a lot more like the guy we saw for four years in Calgary, and time will tell whether that is to be attributed to his preseason injury, the Flyers’ rough start, or expected regression, but my money is on the latter. Woll, meanwhile, has been a real bright spot amidst this ugly start to the season in Philadelphia. The talent has always been there for Woll, he just hasn’t been able to stay healthy long enough to establish himself as a full-time starter. I still have my doubts regarding durability and think he’s best suited for a timeshare to keep his body fresh, but the gap between him and Vladar is growing by the day. I am much more interested in the Flyers and their unders on the nights we get Woll.
Linus Ullmark to Sam Ersson
I’ve been quick to upgrade Ullmark on his return to form. He’s among the best in the league when on top of his game and whatever was plaguing him last season appears to be a thing of the past. Ersson came into the league in 2023 and took everyone by surprise, but outside of a 20-game rookie stretch that was clearly an anomaly, we have all the evidence we need to know he is not an NHL caliber goalie. This is now my biggest starter to backup dropoff in the league.
John Gibson to Daniil Tarasov
I upgraded Tarasov considerably last season and continue to do so early on. He really transformed his game last year and has clearly taken yet another step, to the point where I’m comfortable saying he’s actually a solid NHL goalie. The biggest concern I have with him is not ability, but durability. Here are his total appearances per season since arriving in North America (AHL and NHL combined): 15, 28, 28, 22, 33. I’m not sure he can handle a big workload and have made a note to monitor and react to any noticeable dips in play as we get later in the season, but for now I have to give him the respect he deserves. With Gibson, he was great last year and I am willing to be more patient given the track record and current mess in Detroit, but it hasn’t been a great start for him and the gap between these two is closing in a hurry.
Tristan Jarry to Devon Levi
Coming into the season it would have been fair to question whether Levi was even an NHL-caliber goalie. His last start in the league was in January 2025 and none of his previous three NHL stints offered much reason for belief. He’s still 24 though, which is a fair age for him to put it all together. I’m taking things with a grain of salt given the light schedule thus far, but there is reason for optimism here. He’s trending way up, and Jarry isn’t of a starting caliber.
Joel Hofer to Jordan Binnington
The writing has been on the wall here for some time. Hofer clearly established himself as the better goalie in this tandem last year (and by a considerable margin), but a strong end to the season for Binnington left me wondering if maybe, just maybe, Binnington still had enough in the tank to close the gap. That’s clearly not the case. Hofer has fully taken over in St. Louis and the gap between the two has never been bigger. This is a Lukas Dostal to Ville Husso level of dropoff for me.
